his comments were extremely stupid (similar to Obama's blabbering about racism in the arrest of that professor before knowing any real facts) and he deserved the defamation suit against him, but I hardly view what he said as an affront to the Marines generally.
Look, the man was a Marine himself. Obviously, in his mind, he honestly believed that a small group of Marines massacred/murdered (use whatever word elicits the most emotion) a bunch of unarmed civilians. If it were true, should he have kept quiet? Not dissed our servicemen? If a cop knows that his partner is "dirty," should he keep quiet so as not to diss police in general?
There was a lot of conflicting information here. I certainly didn't follow it all, but hell, as XJ's link shows, four of the Marines were actually charged with murder in connection with the shooting. The charges were eventually dropped, but there must have been enough "evidence" to bring the charges in the first place.
I'm not defending this guy. As a public figure, he should have refrained from running his mouth at a time that an investigation was still going on. But I certainly don't view him as the Marine hater that certain people in this thread seem to be painting him.
